[TamilNet, Monday, 24 December 2007, 18:06 GMT]
Nominations to nine local authorities in the Batticaloa district are to be called between January 11 and 21 next year and elections would be held between five and seven weeks from the last date of nominations. Official communiqué in this regard would be issued on January 4, Provincial Councils and Local Authorities Ministry said in a statement released on Monday.

The local authorities are Batticaloa Municipal Council, Pradesya Sabaha of Eravur, Koralaipathu, Koralaipathu west, Manmunai North, Manmunai South, Manmunai South West, Periyapouratheivu, and Eruvilpattu, sources said.

Elections are to be held according to the Local Government Ordinance Special Provisions Act recently passed in the parliament enabling the Election Commission to invalidate the nominations called last year and to call for fresh nomination to these local bodies, ministry sources said.
