Poojitha Jayasundera, until recently was serving as Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) of Kurunegala District, has been appointed as the new DIG for Jaffna, media reports in Colombo said.
Mr.Jayasundera who previously served in Colombo during times of political turmoil reached Jaffna Thursday by a special flight, had talks with Major General.G.A.Chandasiri, Commander of the Jaffna security forces, concerning the prevailing situation in the peninsula. The new DIGP later had a series of special conferences with the Officers in Charge (OIC) of the various police stations in the peninsula. After the closure of the land route to Jaffna A-9 Highway, except for the police stations functioning within the premises of various magistrate courts, most other police stations in the province have not been functioning effectively. The appointment of the new IGP is seen as a move to bring these police stations into action and make them to be more proactive, legal sources said.
