Foreign, local monitors to supervise local elections in Batticaloa

PAFFREL, a Sri Lanka based organization monitoring parliamentary and local elections in the island, said Friday that it would deploy twenty monitors from United States of America, New Zealand, and Germany, and 200 local monitors to monitor the elections to nine local authorities.
Meanwhile, no political party and independent groups had submitted nomination papers to contest any of the nine local authorities in the Batticaloa till 12 noon Friday when the Batticaloa election office made necessary arrangement to accept such nomination from registered political parties and independent groups from January 18 to January 25, sources said. 270471 registered voters are qualified to exercise their franchise to elect 101 members to nine local councils.
