ICRC hands over 9 bodies to LTTE in Oamanthai

International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) officials in Vavuniyaa handed over nine dead bodies to Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Oamanthai in LTTE controlled area Wednesday around 9:00 a.m, sources in Vavuniyaa said. The Sri Lanka Army had handed over the 9 bodies to Vavuniyaa hospital Tuesday.
Vavuniyaa district magistrate, after conducting inquest into the deaths, instructed the police to hand over the 9 bodies to ICRC after postmortem examination in Vavuniyaa hospital. Vavuniya police said that the 9 youths had been shot and killed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in clashes with the LTTE at separate places in Mannaar district Monday. The bodies of the 9 youths were handed over to Vavuniyaa hospital where inquest into the deaths was held in the presence of Vavuniyaa district magistrate. Meanwhile, SLA troops shot and killed a youth in Raaseanthiraku’lam area in Vavuniyaa. Vavuniyaa police claimed that the youth killed was one of the four in a group that had attacked the SLA. A pistol, suicide jacket and some cyanide tablets were recovered from the killed youth, the police claimed. An SLA soldier injured in the attack was rushed to Vavuniyaa hospital and then transferred to Aunradapura hospital for further treatment. Vavuniyaa district magistrate conducted the inquest into the death at the site. The body of the youth was not identified.
