Vanni artificial limb facility open

An artificial limb manufacturing facility was opened in the Wanni last Thursday on the International Disabled Week, said sources in the north today. The facility is called The White Dove and was ceremonially opened by Dr.S.Sivaguru they said.

NGO's sources who had helped put up the White Dove artificial limb manufacturing facility said that Vanni region has a very large and growing population of people who have lost their limbs in the war.

The Sri Lankan government has imposed a ban on taking any type of artificial limbs or the material required to produce them to the Vanni.

The Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunge, while addressing the 8th Annual Sports meet of the Disabled said that a separate department will be set up to look after the welfare and the needs of the disabled in the country.
