Abducted UPFA candidate released, in Batticaloa

A United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidate abducted Friday from his house by unidentified armed men in a white van was released Saturday around 9:30 p.m after being severely assaulted, in a coconut plantation area in Mayilaampaavea’li in Ea’raavoor police division in Batticaloa district, sources said.
The released contestant, Sankarathas Sivananathathas, 54, said that he was blind folded and abducted in a van, and that the abductors had severely assaulted him, in his complaint made to Kaaththaankudi police Sunday morning. The abductors subjected him to severe interrogation about his contesting the election on UPFA ticket, he added. Sivananthathas was appointed by TMVP paramilitary group to contest in Batticaloa Municipal Council Elections on the ruling UPFA ticket. The contestant being a former member of EROS may have been abducted for the strong support from people he enjoys, TMVP sources said.
