Lion Air relatives file complaints

The Sri Lankan Police in Mannar initiated an inquest into the death of the Jaffna University student Miss.K.L.Fernando at the district courts of Mannar, on a complaint lodged by her father, Seeman Anthonymuthu Fernando of Vankalai. Miss Fernando was among the passengers of the Lion Air Flight that went missing over the seas off the northern coast of Mannar on 29 September.

The Police said that seven such complaints have been lodged with them by relatives of the other passengers.

The Police stated in its report submitted to the District Court of Mannar today, that the incident had taken place in an area controlled by the Liberation Tigers and that the Police or the security forces were unable to accompany the Judge or the Medical Officer to visit the scene to hold an inquiry.

The Police requested a decision by the court on issuing certificates of death and holding inquests in connection with the said complaints.

The court was adjourned till December 9.

The Lion Air flight was flying to Colombo from Jaffna when it crashed into the sea. 48 passengers and 7 crew have been reported killed in the crash.
