Nearly 50 Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers who came on bicycles rounded up bystanders and passengers at the Jaffna Bus Station and conducted a search operation today. The operation went on for several hours, said sources.
Meanwhile 4 persons, belonging to one family, were arrested by the SLA in Chavakachcheri on December 5. They were arrested after a claymore mine exploded at a place called Periya Arasadi. The arrested are: Veerakathi Ponnaiah, 58, Rasaammah Ponnaiah, 50. Suntharam Jeeva, 35, and Jeeva Ramani, 32. Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna will neither organise nor participate any arrangements to celebrate the International Human Rights Day, on December 10, said Mr. S.Sreetharan, who leads the commission's Jaffna branch. In a letter to the HRC's head office in Colombo, Mr. Sreetharan said that people in Jaffna expect the Government to take constructive steps regarding the alleged mass graves in Chemmani. He said it will not be appropriate for the organisation to participate in International Human Rights Day celebrations when the Government is deliberately delaying investigating the Chemmani mass graves.
