Unidentified gunmen shot dead a councilor of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Mr. Mohammed Imtiaz, representing the governing People's Alliance (PA), yesterday evening at around 4 p.m.
The gunmen were traveling in a van and opened fire at the councilor at a traffic intersection in Maradana, a suburb in Colombo. Meanwhile Johnson Fernando, a United National Party candidate for the North-Western Provincial Council (NWPC), has filed an entry at the Kurunagle Police claiming that armed men had opened fire at his office on Tuesday night. Police sources said that they had found four T 56 bullets embedded on his office wall. Mr. Johnson has also complained to the police about death threats he has received asking him to withdraw his name from the UNP nomination list. The Police, on orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), have set up a special Election Task Force, consisting of police officers, to counter violence related with the election.
