Jaffna census details released

608,916 civilians belonging to 180,216 families reside in areas under the administration of 15 District Secretary (DS) areas in Jaffna peninsula, a report released Wednesday by Jaffna secretariat said.

The breakdown of the details listed in the report regarding the number of families and the total number of members of these families residing in areas under the administration of 15 DS follow:

Attempts to take census in Jaffna earlier in 1998 and 2000 were stalled due to warnings issued by Changkilian Padai (Force).

Another attempt to conduct census in the peninsula was started on 04 Oct 2007, and once in February 2008 Jaffna Government Agent (GA), Regional and Divisional Secretaries and officials involved in taking census in Jaffna peninsula received warning notices signed by Changkilian Force asking them to stop all census taking immediately.

The GoSL is conducting the special census only in the North and East of Sri Lanka to reduce the facilities provided to people on the basis of population statistics and for other sinister military motives, the letters to the above officials said.
