Election campaigns conclude in east[TamilNet, Thursday, 08 May 2008, 02:49 GMT]Election campaign activities of political parties and independent groups in the east concluded from Wednesday midnight as directed by the Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake. The Commissioner of Elections has directed the law enforcement authority to remove all posters, cutouts and other election related printed matters displayed in public places with immediate effect, reports from the east said. Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the election security affairs, Gamini Navaretna, told media persons that those who violate election ordinance and indulge in illegal activity would be prosecuted under the law. About 27,000 police personnel have been deployed in the east to maintain law and order till the counting is over, he added. Five police personnel would be deployed to each polling station in the east on the Election Day to ensure security, he said. Meanwhile, members of Asian Election Monitoring Authority arrived in the three districts-Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampaarai in the east to supervise the pre and post election situation. They met several civil representatives in important towns in the east to assess the ground situation, media sources said.
