North Ceylon Journalists Association (NCJA) officially handed over a batch of books to Government Agent (GA) Jaffna Friday to be distributed among persons placed in protective custody due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and SLA-backed paramilitaries, sources in Jaffna said. The persons in custody are held in Jaffna Prison, Kurunakar Rehabilitation Centre, and Thellippa’lai SLA Rehabilitation Camp.
The Secretary of NCJA, N. Parameswaran, handed over the books to the GA in response to the request made in the media by the GA appealing the public to donate books. More than 315 persons in Jaffna Prison, nearly 32 in Kurunakar Rehabilitation Centre, and the 55 in SLA Rehabilitation Camp will be the recipients of these books. The GA said he will take steps to ensure that there is a fair distribution of books to the three locations.
