Intelligence official shoots dead 2 policemen, attempts suicide

An intelligence official at Maha Oya police station in Ampaa'rai district shot and killed two policemen Tuesday around 8:50 a.m in his office with his pistol and then tried shoot himself to death, Mahaoya police said. Fellow police officers prevented the intelligence official from killing himself and had him admitted to Kandy hospital. Maha Oya is situated 44 km northwest of Ampaa'rai town.

The intelligence official with the rank of Sub Inspector of Police, shot and killed A. M. W. Pushpakumara of Pittawala Gopara and H. M. N. Jayawardne from Deldeniya.

Mahaoya police said that the Sub Inspector could have fired due to mental disorder. Medical examinations would be held to confirm this, the Police said.

The bodies of the two victims are kept at Mahaoya hospital for inquest into the deaths to be held.
