2 seek protection with HRC, laborer reported missing in Jaffna

A shop assistant from Thenmaraadchi and a family man from Kuppi’laan sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna office Tuesday due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops and SLA-backed paramilitaries, HRC Investigation Officer said. Meanwhile, a laborer from Sarasaalai in Thenmaraadchi has been reported missing since Sunday, after having left home for work, according to complaint made by his family members to HRC Jaffna.
The 21-year-old shop assistant is a resident of Meesaalai South, Chaavakachcheari in Thenmaraadchi. The family man who sought protection is a 25-year old father of two children. The labourer reported missing is Kanthaswamy Hariharan, 21, a resident of Sarasaalai in Themaraadchi. He is the sole bread-winner of the family, the complainants told the Investigation Officer. Number of persons from Thenmaraadchi, including families with children, seeking protection to their lives due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops and SLA-backed paramilitaries, with HRC Jaffna is on the increase in recent times, HRC sources said.
