Parliamentarian Reggie Ranatunge passes away

Reggie Ranatunge, senior parliamentarian of the Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) passed away Saturday morning at the age of 71 after a brief illness. He is the father of Arjuna Ranatunge, former captain of the Sri Lanka Cricket team that won the World Cup in 1996 and currently a parliamentarian.
He was first elected to Sri Lanka parliament in 1989. There after he served as the deputy minister and minister in the governments of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and UPFA. Reggie Ranatunge also served as the Governor of Sabragamuwa Province before being appointed parliamentarian to fill the vacancy created by the sudden demise of Sripathi Sooriyarachchi in a road accident at the beginning of the year.
