Unidentified men who abducted 12 Muslim civilians collecting firewood from Meyaangoda area within Poththuvil police division, Ampaa’rai, four days ago released nine of them Friday, sources said.

Three of those abducted were released earlier but the abductors had demanded a ransom Rs.30,000 for the rest of the group to be released.

The three abductees released earlier had lodged a complaint with Special Task Force (STF) commandos who rushed to the area but were unable to apprehend the abductors.

However, the remaining nine civilians were released Friday after being severely tortured.
