CWC, UPF to contest Sabragamuwa PC separately

[TamilNet, Thursday, 19 June 2008, 08:30 GMT]
The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) and Upcountry Peoples Front (UPF) Thursday officially announced that they would contest the election to the Sabragamuwa Provincial Council separately and not in the ticket of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA). CWC and UPF are constituents of the UPFA. Leaders of the parties have been holding ministerial portfolios in the cabinet led by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

A senior leader of the CWC, R.Yogarajan, said his party leadership has decided to field candidates in the SPC election alone and not in alliance with the ruling UPFA or with any other party. He said in the 2004 provincial council also the CWC contested the SPC alone.

UPF leader and a minister Periyasamy Chandrasekaran said his party also has decided to contest the SPC alone and not in alliance with the UPFA.

However, he added that he has been taking steps to form an electoral alliance with the CWC and other Tamil parties in the upcountry to contest the SPC election under one banner to ensure better representation of the upcountry Tamils in the Sabragamuwa PC.
