The remains of Paranirupasingam Thevakumar, Jaffna correspondent of Sakthi Radio and Television, hacked to death May 28 in the outskirts of Jaffna town, was cremated Saturday according to Saiva rites. The remains of Thevakumar were exhumed 37 days after his demise from Koththaththu'rai burial grounds at Araali West and cremated with permission granted by Mallakam Court magistrate on appeal made by the slain journalist's wife.

Ms. Subanatnthini Thevakumar had appealed to Ms. Sarogini Illankovan, Mallaakam Courts magistrate, to grant permission to have her husband's remains cremated according to Saiva rites.

It is customary for the remains of persons killed to be burried if the case remains unsolved so that the remains could be exhumed for further examination.

Jaffna correspondent of Sakthi TV station, Paranirupasingam Thevakumar, 34, was abducted while he was returning to his residence in Vaddukkoaddai and hacked to death in Kaakkaitheevu, a barren land on 28 May.
