Appoint Election Monitoring Committee - Opposition
[TamilNet, Sunday, 10 January 1999, 14:09 GMT]
If the Government has a genuine intention to hold a free and fair election it should appoint an independent committee to monitor the forthcoming North-Western Provincial Council elections, said the Sri Lankan Opposition leader, Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe, at a campaign rally held in Vennappuwa yesterday.
The appointment of an independent election monitoring committee will also show that the President was genuine. He said the Government could summon an emergency parliament meeting to appoint such a committee and define the necessary regulations for it and if it is not possible, the president could use the laws under the emergency regulations to take necessary steps. The President, however, should issue a statement regarding his suggestion he demanded. The elections for NWPC are due on January 25. The election campaign, according to the Police, has been marked by widespread violence including intimidation, threats, arson. The Police has appointed a special committee to monitor and control the violence.
