Armed men clad in military uniform, arriving in a white van, abducted five men Thursday around 8:15 p.m at Third Kurichchi area in Ea’raavoor police division in Batticaloa district, according to complaints lodged with the police by the relatives. Four of them were released after being interrogated in the Kalladi office of the paramilitary-cum-political party, Thamil Makkal Viduthali Pulikal (TMVP).

The person not released is S. S. Samat, 45, a father of 3 children and a resident of New Makkaamadi Veethi, Third Kurichchi in Ea’raavoor.

Samat is the president of Ea’raavoor Fisheries Society and a member of Muslim Mosques Federation.

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers had searched Samat’s house three days ago and the soldiers again searched the house immediately after he was abducted, residents of the area said.

The white van used in the abduction has been seen on Batticaloa-Vaazhaichcheanai Main Street three to four times, they added.

Ea’raavoor is located 16km north of Batticaloa town.
