Electricity transformer fired upon in Vadamaraadchi[TamilNet, Saturday, 09 August 2008, 07:12 GMT]Unidentified armed men opened rapid fire Thursday midnight on the main electricity transformer at Arasadi Chanththi in Karaveddi, Vadamaraadchi along Nelliyadi-Kodikaamam road, damaging the transformer and cutting off electricity supply to the above area, sources in Vadamaraadchi said. Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers who came to Arasadi Chanththi Friday morning launched a cordon and search operation in the area and in the adjoining villages including Rajakiraamam. No one has been arrested in connection with the attack on the transformer. Two weeks ago a similar gun attack was made on a transformer in Meesaalai in Themaraadchi cutting of electricity supply. Reparation was done and the supply of electricity resumed. A Chinese firm which has entered into a contract with Sri Lanka government to generate and supply electricity to Jaffna peninsula is presently engaged in preliminary work from its worksite at Chu’n’naakam. A group of Chinese workers have arrived in the peninsula to carry on the next stage of the contract.
