Civilian killed, 2 injured in SLA shelling in Mullaiththeevu[TamilNet, Tuesday, 12 August 2008, 17:21 GMT]Sri Lanka Army (SLA) from its bases in Ma’nalaa’ru area launched artillery and Multi-barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) fire Monday around 6:50 p.m on Kumu’lamunai, Chemmalai and Nedungkea’ni residential areas in Vanni killing a 57-year-old man and seriously injuring two, including a 46-year-old woman in Kumu’lamunai. The victim killed was identified as S. Tharmalingam, 57, a father of five children and a resident of Ward 7 in Kumu’lamunai in Mullaiththeevu district. The seriously injured persons are A. Balasuntharam, 40, a father of three children from Puthukkudiyiruppu staying at Kumulamunai while the other is Ms. T. Alagamma, 46, a mother of four children from Kumu’lamunai Centre. Tharmalingam, rushed to Mullaitheevu District Hospital with injuries to his chest and stomach, succumbed to his wounds Tuesday around 8:00 a.m, hospital sources said. Though the shells fell and exploded in Chemmalai and Nedungkea’ni area no one was hurt. Some cattle were killed in the shelling in the above areas. SLA artillery and MBRL attacks on civilian settlements in Vanni, on government offices and officers have been stepped up in recent times. Vanni residents live in constant fear and an atmosphere of insecurity and danger prevails in Vanni. Chronology:
