Brigadier holds security meeting

Brigadier Marambe, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 51 division in Jaffna convened a meeting this morning for all the elected heads of the local government bodies in peninsula to discuss their personal and official security.

The chairmen of the Pradeshiya Sabhas controlled by the EPDP were all present at the meeting said sources.

TULF's Chairman of the Waligamam North Pradheshiya Sabha (PS) Mr.S Paaskaran was also present at the meeting.

The TELO and the PLOTE who were invited to attend did not show up.

The Brigadier (soon to be promoted Major general) said that Police could be deployed in the premises of the PS offices and at the residences of the PS members in order to ensure a degree of protection.

The question of issuing handguns to the PS members was discussed at the meeting but no final decision on the matter was taken said an EPDP source who was present at the meeting today.

The discussion took place at the 51 division headquarters at Atchelu in Jaffna.

Meanwhile, a TULF councilor of the Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC), S.Karunanithi, resigned from his position today.

He has submitted his letter of resignation to the Jaffna District Assistant Commissioner of Election said sources.
