155 Sri Lankan armed personnel were killed and 983 wounded during August in the war against the LTTE, said Sri Lanka's Prime Minister, Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, when the parliament resumed sittings Tuesday to debate on the motion of extending the State of Emergency for another month, parliamentary sources said.
Mr Wickremanayake said the government has been determined to usher democracy and rule of law in the Northern Province, and that the security forces are moving forward in the fight against the LTTE to free the people of the area. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, parliamentary group leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), said a secret plot has been hatched to hand over Kachchatheevu to India. This cannot be allowed to succeed at any cost, he added. The debate is continuing.
