Unidentified gunmen arriving at the house of a young woman Wednesday around 2:30 p.m at Kaithadi North in Thenmaraadchi, shot and killed her, sources in Thenmaraadchi said. The woman who had to report at the local Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp every week and sign in a register there, had done so Wednesday morning, the sources added.
The victim was identified as Sivaramalingam Nanthajini, 21. The killers had fired more than three shots on Nanthajini at point blank range. SLA soldiers had launched a cordon and search operation Wednesday morning in her village just before the killers gunned her down. All the males in the village had been taken to the local SLA camp for interrogation following the search, leaving only women in the village. The victim’s body is kept in Jaffna Teaching Hospital mortuary for post mortem examination to be held. Meanwhile, early this week, a young woman had been shot and killed by unidentified armed men in a similar manner as she was returning home after reporting at the local SLA camp in Kodikaamam in Thenmaraadchi where she had signed the register, police investigations held into the killing revealed. Many persons in Thenmaraadchi who had to sign the register in their local SLA camps had been shot and killed by unidentified armed men after they had reported and signed the register, residents in Thenmaradchi said. Fear and anxiety prevails among them due to this systematic killings of persons reporting at the SLA camps to sign the register.
