Youth shot near SLA camp in Jaffna

Two men on motorbike waylaid a youth Sunday around 6:45 p.m near the Sri
Lanka Army (SLA) camp on Dutch Road in I'lavaalai, Valikaamam, and shot him
dead after chasing away his two brothers who accompanied him,
according to the complaint lodged by the brothers to I'lavaalai police. The
brothers said they heard sound of gun shots soon after they were sent
back when they went to inform the soldiers of the Vi'laan SLA camp
located close to I'lavaalai SLA camp of the incident, the brothers
said in the complaint. The soldiers at Vi'laan SLA camp had asked them
to come back on Monday morning.
The victim, identified as Tharumarasa Kopinath, 22, and his brothers are
residents of Vasanthapuram, Keerimalai in Valikaamam. Kopinath and his two brothers are employees of AMD Transport Company in
Irupaalai which transports, stores, and distributes goods unloaded from ships
in Maiyiliddi jetty located in the SLA High Security Zone. On Sunday the three brothers had returned home on motorbikes after
working in Maiyiliddi jetty. I'lavaalai police recovered the body Monday evening and handed the
body over to Jaffna Teaching Hospital. Mallaakam magistrate Ms. Sarojini Illankovan conducted the inquest into the
death at the site of the killing.
