Shelling hits civilians

A civilian was killed and three others were wounded when two shells fired by the Sri Lankan Army stationed in Maankerni camp hit Mathurankerni in Vakarai in the Batticaloa district today around 10 a.m.

Annathanam Rasanathan, 35, died on the spot while a ten year old boy Nareshkanthan Rasanathan, Vairamuththu Krishnapillai, 50, and Kalikkuddi Sambu Nathan, 50 were wounded in the shelling.

The wounded were brought to the Batticaloa hospital around 5 p.m. as they had to be to transported in bullock carts to Valaichchenai, from where they were transported in Ambulance.

Meanwhile sources said four shells fired by the SLA hit Kunchankulam in Vakarai. However, details of casualties were not known yet.
