Douglas, Anandasangari prepare for election campaign in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Sunday, 21 December 2008, 12:48 GMT]
Douglas Devananda, a cabinet minister in the Rajapaksa government and the leader of paramilitary-cum-political party EPDP and V. Anandasangari of the TULF, are both busily engaged in preparatory meetings for election campaign in Jaffna, informed sources in Jaffna told TamilNet. No official announcement, however, has been made by Sri Lanka government on holding elections in Jaffna peninsula.

Currently, Mr. Anandasangari is on his second visit to Jaffna for election campaign and is staying at the TULF office on Stanley Road, where he holds meetings with his supporters in the peninsula.

All vehicles and public passing through Stanley Road are allowed to proceed only after thorough checking.

Meanwhile the EPDP, a main violator of human rights along with the Sri Lankan military establishment in Jaffna, organised a "protest march" calling attention to to the human rights of the people in Vanni and to "request" the opening of A-32 route from Jaffna peninsula for civilian use.

The march began around Sunday around 9:00 a.m and ended at Thenmaraadchi Divisional Secretaritat office at 1:00 p.m, covering a distance of 5 km.

The EPDP has also instructed the civil and public organizations in the peninsula to attend meetings held in its local offices.

Fishermen societies in Vadamaraadchi and fishermen society representatives from other areas in the peninsula also have been instructed to participate in the EPDP meetings, fishermen society sources said.

SLA officials are also ordering the civil and public organizations to attend the EPDP meetings, they added.
