Slain parliamentarian Maheswaran’s death anniversary held in Jaffna

Hundreds of people from different parts of Jaffna peninsula took part in the first death anniversary of Mr. Thiyagarasa Maheswaran held Sunday around 9:00 a.m in the Trustee Board Hall of Kaarainakar Sivan Koayil in his home town. He was gunned down while observing prayers in Colombo Ponnampalavaa'neasvarar Koayil on January 1 this year.

The event began with the welcome address by Aiyaa Sachithananthan, a journalist in Jaffna and the memorial lecture while three books, ‘Maheswaran as seen by Media’, ‘Tribute by Parliament’ and ‘Maheswaran speeches in Parliament’, were released in the memorial event.

N. Vijayasundaram, the editor of ‘Valampuri’ daily spoke on the merits of the books released.

Prayers were held in remembrance of Maheswaran is several Saiva temples including the historically famous Tho’ndaimaanaa’ru Chelvachchanathi Koayil and Vallipuram Aazhvaar Koayil in Vadamaraadchi.

A similar event was held in the temporary residence of Maheswaran in Jaffna town and in the Homes for Saiva children in the peninsula.
