Weekly fast for Vanni displaced

Students and the Parish priest of Murunkan have begun a program of saving money through not eating for one day a week and contributing the savings to alleviate the suffering of the displaced in the Vanni, sources in Mannar said.

Rev. Fr.Jeyabalan Croos said that they were concerned about the hundreds of thousands of people displaced in the Vanni and have decided to sacrifice their food and pray for them on Fridays.

"We have decided to send the savings to help the refugees who are suffering without adequate food and essentials" he said.

Meanwhile sources in Vanni said that the "Thamilar PunarvaalvuKalaham" has launched a programme to assists malnourished mothers and children in the area.

Fifteen centres have been set up all over Vanni for this purpose, said the sources.

In Mullaithivu district this organisation has started centres to look after up to 50 malnourished children with their mothers, the sources said
