Christopher Chrishanthan, member of the PLOTE's student organisation, who was shot at by unidentified gunmen at Vairavapuliyankulam in Vavuniya yesterday died at the Anuradhapura hospital around midnight last night.
His relatives said that he was a student at the Vavuniya Tamil Mathiya Maha Vidyalayam (school) and was an activist in the PLOTE's student organisation. Sri Lankan Police sources said earlier that the shooting might be linked to the vendetta between the PLOTE and TELO over the collection of money from businesses in Vavuniya. Adaikkalanathan Selvam, a senior member of the TELO and a Member of Parliament, however, denied the allegations. He said that his group had nothing to do with the killing of the student. Meanwhile, sources in Vavuniya said that security has been stepped by in the town. Sri Lankan Security Forces have increased road side checks and foot patrols in the town area, the sources added. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Air Force sources said that 3 Liberation Tigers were killed and 6 wounded in an air attack by the Kfir jets in Mullaithivu, Thursday morning.
