Youths placed in Jaffna Prison to be issued with new NIC

[TamilNet, Friday, 13 February 2009, 19:01 GMT]
Jaffna magistrate court is making arrangements to help the youths who sought protection to their lives with Jaffna Human Rights Commission (HRC) and placed in the protective custody of Jaffna Prison, to get new National Identity Cards (NICs), as their NICs had been confiscated by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers, Jaffna sources said. The youths had sought protection as they were ordered to report at the SLA camp in their areas to get their NICs back, the sources added.

Jaffna court has taken this step as a considerable number of youths placed in Jaffna Prison are unable travel abroad as they are not in possession of their NICs.

The youths wishing to leave the country and the Village Officers, government officials of the areas were summoned to Jaffna magistrate court Friday where steps were taken to issue new NICs for the said youths.

Most of the youths in the above category express a desire to get out of the country in fear of their lives, legal officials of the youths said.
