An external BA student of the Jaffna University was found shot dead under mysterious circumstances this morning at the Durga temple near the Kanakampuliyadi junction in the Thenmaradchi sector in Jaffna.
The student, Chellappa Kulasekeram 27, displaced from Myliddy and now living in Nunavil near Chavakachcheri, left Jaffna town with his friend Velupillai Sarvarajah 24, last evening around 7.30 p.m. after having tea at Rolex Café. They were travelling on Chellappa's scooter (licence plate no.84 Sri 3364) near Kanakampuliyadi when Sarvarajah, who was riding the pinion was shot and wounded in the back by some uniformed gunmen. They then pulled him off from the scooter. And one of them got on the pinion and told Chellappa to proceed, according to Sarvarajah who has been admitted to the Jaffna hospital. In the morning Chellappa was found dead with gun shot wounds. A large number of unspent ammo was found by the body. His friends say that he had had an argument recently with a Sri Lankan army unit in Chavakachcheri which styles itself 'Thaaththa Group' after he refused to give them his scooter. Chellappa runs a bakery in Nunavil.
