Jaffna University pays last respects to Prof. Krishnarajah

Students, faculty deans and lectures gathered in Kailasapathy Auditorium in Jaffna University Tuesday noon to pay their last respects to the remains of Prof. Somasuntharam Krishnarajah in an event presided by Prof. N. Shanmugalingan, Vice-chancellor of Jaffna University. Prof. Krishnarajah died Friday in a private hospital in Colombo Friday and his remains were interred in Jaffna Tuesday, sources in Jaffna said.

Late Prof. Krishnarajah who became the dean of the faculty of Arts in late 2007 had actively strived to raise the standard of it, Jaffna University Teachers’ Union (JUTU) said in the tribute speech paid to Late Krishnarajah.

Krishnarajah was one of the early members of JUTU and had been the president of the union in 1996.

He graduated with honours in philosophy from Peredeniya University in earned his Masters degree in 1974.

Moscow University bestowed a doctorate in philosophy on Krisnarajah in 1983. He began his career as a lecturer in Jaffna University and became a senior lecturer in 1983.

He became a junior professor in 1995 and a senior professor in 2001.

Prof. Krishnarajah’s untimely death is an inrreparable loss to Jaffna University and the Tamil society, JUTU representatives said.
