Nomination date for Jaffna Municipal Council election announced

While 40 to 50 percent of Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) voters internally displaced or living in foreign countries, Jaffna election department has announced that the nominations for the forthcoming JMC elections have to be made from 18 to 25 June. The Election Commissioner will announce the date of the JMC election once the nomination lists have been tendered, sources in Jaffna said.

There are 100,170 eligible voters within JMC area, and more than 40,000 of these voters registered in Jaffna are now held in the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) internment camps in Vavuniyaa or are living abroad.

Around 10,124 Muslims from JMC area are now living in areas outside Jaffna, including Puththa’lam.

The deposit amount can be paid up till June 24, and the nomination lists should be submitted from 18 to June 25. Petitions against the nominations should reach the election department before 1:00 p.m on 25 June, election officials said.

Nomination lists from registered political parties should be submitted 72 hours prior to the Election Officer before they are tendered.

The list should contain the names of 29 candidates including those aspiring for the post of mayor and deputy mayor while 12 of the contestants should be "young."
