Portrait of SLFP organiser unveiled

[TamilNet, Sunday, 16 November 1997, 23:59 GMT]
A portrait of the Jaffna SLFP organiser C. Tharmalingam was officially unveiled at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Office (SLFP) in Jaffna town today. The SLFP office is located at the Hospital road- Vembady road junction.

The portrait was unveiled by the Sudu Nelum (white lotus) movement's Jaffna organiser Mr. 'Mangala' Nesan. The Sudu Nelum is an arm of the SLFP. It is supervised by Mr. Mangala Samaraweera, a confidante of President Chandrika and the minister for media.

The Jaffna organiser has prefixed the minister's name to his, in a show of loyalty said sources in Jaffna.

One of the Sudu Nelum movement's chief co-ordinators Mr. Joe Seniveratne who supervises the SLFP's work in the north, has said that the Sudu Nelum would be taking over the building near the Jaffna Kachcheri which was used as the LTTE civil administration secretariat before Riviresa One in late 1995.

Mr. Joe Seniveratne was a member of the EPRLF and was a minister in the EPRLF's ill-fated provincial council from 1988 to 1990. He is a senior member of the MIRJE - a powerful human rights organisation in Colombo.

Another senior member of the organisation Mr. Manoranjan, who is also a director of the state run TV station, is involved, along with Joe Seneveratne, in the SLFP promotion work in the peninsula.

Meanwhile, a lesser known supporter of the SLFP in Jaffna has had a bitter experience with the army which his party officials in the peninsula are trying to portray as the friendly forces of the Tamil people's salvation.

He had obtained, through his party contacts, a liquor license to open a bar in Columbuthurai. The place was called Hollywood Bar.

Soldiers involved in Kassippu (Hooch) business in the area did not take kindly to this.

They have removed the bar's board and thrown it into the lagoon.
