President outlines election plans

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumarathunge said that the present government has two more years in office and that an election would be held at the end of this term as scheduled.
She was speaking at a public meeting in the CWW Kannangara School premises in Matugama yesterday. The president said that the new election culture created over the past four years would be maintained in the future. "Stern action will be taken against those who obstruct this process" she added. The president further said that her government had laid a firm economic foundation and had eliminated fear and malpractice from the lives of the people. Referring to the southeast Asian economic crisis she said that Sri Lanka had achieved several economical gains. She said that although she had been serving the entire country as President, she "will focus more attention on assuming responsibility for the Western Province."
