Jaffna producers lose millions of rupees due to government restriction - JCC

Jaffna Chamber of Commerce (JCC) representatives blamed Sri Lanka government for being partial to traders from the South to market their produces freely in Jaffna while restricting the possibilities of taking Jaffna produces to the South, in a meeting held Friday in Jaffna town with the Industries Service Bureau. Only a third of the number of lorries bringing produces from the South are allowed by the government to take Jaffna produces like onions and fish products to the South, they further pointed out.

JCC called upon the Southern Chambers of Commerce to raise the matter with the government enabling local producers to send their produces to the South without any restrictions.

Appeals made through government ministers several times have not been even considered by the government which shows a step motherly attitude to Jaffna producers and traders, JCC representatives said.

This attitude of the government and its calculated restrictions have caused millions of rupees loss to the producers in Jaffna as their products stagnate unsold, they explained.

Kurunagelle Chamber of Commerce representatives participated in the above meeting with a request to promote marketing facilities in Jaffna for their produces.

K. Janathkumar and S. Jeyasekaram represented JCC in the meeting.

A trade agreement was signed between K. Janathkumar and Southern Trader, Neelakhan on the occasion.
