The Monitoring Centre of the Vanni IDPs in Vavuniyaa camps said
Saturday that it had received 723 complaints so far relating to food,
clothes, and health and toilets facilities. The monitoring centre is
set up by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). The convener of the
centre Mr.Wijitha Herat, JVP parliamentarian, said fifteen liters of
water are supplied to each family per day to meet all needs.
He said the food problem had become acute. The World Food Program and another NGO had been involved in supplying food to units consisting of 50 families. They are given only rice, dhal and flour. The scarcity of milk powder is so intense that a packet of milk powder cannot be bought even at Rs. 2000. A number of other problems has emerged as no
steps have been taken to deal with the situation resulting from the monsoon raims. According to him, a camp of 70, 000 has only 200 toilets, which are
woefully inadequate to cope with such a large number and as a result
these toilets are overflowing raising health concerns.
