Minister G. L. Pieris in Jaffna canvassing for Mahinda

G. L. Pieris, a cabinet minister in the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and a former United National Party (UNP) prominent person, arrived in Jaffna Wednesday to campaign for Mahinda Rajapakse in the presidential election, sources in Jaffna said. G. L. Pieris who visited various places in Jaffna peninsula meeting people is expected spend some more days in Jaffna.
The minister's main purpose of the Jaffna visit is to counter whatever support that had been created for Sarath Fonseka by the leader of the opposition and United National Party (UNP), Ranil Wickremasinghe who was in Jaffna recently along with parliamentarians Mano Ganeshan and Jayalath Jayawardene, the sources further said. G. L. Pieris who first visited the Local Productivity Centre of Chu'n'naakam Muliti Purpose Society later met Jaffna Government Agent and the officials in Jaffna Secretariat. He also visted Jaffna University where he met the VC, Deans and lecturers. He participated as an uninvited guest in a book release function in Jaffna Veerasingham Hall.
