Police use tear gas, water cannons to break up protests

Sri Lanka Police Thursday used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protests launched by opposition parties demanding the unconditional release of General (retd) Sarath Fonseka, in Maharagama, Kandy and other parts of the south, according to media reports.

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) organized the protest held at the Youth Centre at Maharagama in the outskirts of the capital Colombo Thursday evening.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to break up similar protests in several parts of the country over the past 48 hours, Colombo media sources reported.
