Chinese representatives discuss road development projects in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Thursday, 11 March 2010, 16:34 GMT]
Two Key representatives of Chinese government who visited Jaffna Thursday met Jaffna Government Agent, K. Ganesh at Jaffna Secretariat and discussed the projects of broadening five main streets in Jaffna peninsula with Chinese aid, sources in Jaffna said. The representatives, along with the GA and the Director of Planning, inspected the Pa’n’nai causeway bridge located on Jaffna-Oorkaavattu’rai road which had not seen maintenance or repair in the last 30 years due to war. The projects of broadening of Jaffna-Oorkaavattu’rai road into a two-way street and the renovation of the bridge on it have been prioritized, Jaffna Secretariat sources said.

The Chinese aid is to be used to broaden and covert the following roads in Jaffna peninsula into two-way roads: 1. Jaffna-Kaangkeasanthu’rai (KKS) road. 2. Jaffna-Palaali road. 3. Jaffna-Maanippay road. 4. Jaffna-Paruththiththu’rai (Point Pedro) road. 5. Jaffna-Oorkaavattu’rai(Kayts) road.

Pa’n’nai bridge which had been neglected so long has been the cause for many accidents during rainy season claiming the lives of many people.

Many in Jaffna including political parties had been clamouring for the renovation of Pa’n’nai causeway across the sea.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations in the peninsula are concerned for the temples and schools lying along the above roads which may be demolished during the renovation.
