JVP vows to defeat constitutional changes by UPFA government

The Sinhala Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Sunday declared
that it would take all necessary steps to defeat the attempt by the
ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government to change the
constitution to suit to its political agenda. The JVP would muster the
support of other opposition parties to prevent a two-thirds majority
in Parliament for the government to bring about constitutional
changes, JVP parliamentary group leader of the JVP led Democratic
National Alliance (DNA) Anura Kumara Dissanayake said at a media
briefing held Sunday.
Meanwhile, the JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva alleged in an
interview with the Sunday Leader that India is trying to build a power
base affiliated to it in the North and East of Sri Lanka by calling
for the full implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Since the government had not implemented the 13th Amendment in full
since it was introduced 22 years ago through the Indo-Lanka Accord,
the Indian government was now exerting pressure on Sri Lanka for its
full implementation. They want provincial councils to be established
in the North and East and merge the two provinces in order to build a
power base that would be affiliated with India, he said.
