Swiss ambassador to Sri Lanka visits Jaffna, German ambassador's visit cancelled

[TamilNet, Monday, 14 June 2010, 18:39 GMT]
Ms. Ruth Flint, Switzerland ambassador to Sri Lanka arrived in Jaffna Monday where she met Jaffna Government Agent (GA) K. Ganesh in Jaffna Secretariat and discussed development projects carried out by Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) in Jaffna peninsula. Incidentally, TamilNet had reported Friday the construction of a school by CDC in Maravanpulavu in Jaffna district at a cost of 18 million rupees where people have not resettled due to insecurity. Meanwhile, the German ambassador to Sri Lanka who was to participate in a cultural program Monday organized by German Cultural Society in Jaffna had cancelled the visit without any official information for the last minute cancellation of the visit, sources in Jaffna said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Intelligence Wing men and the police in Jaffna were keen in gathering details about the Tamil artistes from Germany participating in the cultural events, local media sources who had been invited to the event said.

Ms. Ruth Flint inspected the school construction work by SDC in Maravanpulavu located in the High Security Zone (HSZ) of Sri Lanka Army (SLA), recently allowed for resettlement.

She had made known the intention of the Swiss government to construct similar schools in the outskirts of HSZs in Thellippazhai and Vadamaraadchi East with the aim to develop education, Jaffna Secretariat sources said.

Meanwhile, educationists in the North pointed out the construction of Children’s Park in Jaffna and Vavuniyaa while the students and schools in war torn Vanni being disregarded as the local and international humanitarian organizations including UNICEF and SDC prefer to spend funds in the projects in Jaffna and Vavuniyaa where their head offices are located.

The cultural event organized by German Cultural Society is indefinitely postponed.
