The United Nations (UN) opened a World Food Programme (WFP) office in
Kilinochchi. It would be expanded in due course including staff from
the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), UN Development Programme
(UNDP), UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN Children’s Fund
(UNICEF) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), media reports said quoting
WFP sources.
WFP sources said that the site earlier used as the office of the WFP
had been destroyed due to heavy aerial and ground bombardment. The
office was closed down in September 2008 due to the heavy fighting
between government forces and the LTTE. Only four employees are now
working and it is expected to deploy more to re-establish the
monitoring of food supply to needy population in the area and to
support the ongoing resettlement, media reports said quoting WFP
