[TamilNet, Tuesday, 06 July 2010, 18:52 GMT]
Leaders of the eighty-three new political parties that applied for
registration before the deadline 30 June have been
waiting for the return of the Commissioner of Elections from abroad to learn
whether their applications are accepted or rejected after interviews. According to Additional Commissioner of Elections, W. P. Sumanasiri, 83 applications had been received.
Applications that are forwarded
contrary to the regulations of the Election Secretariat will be
rejected, Sumanasiri said. One such regulation is that for the recognition as a
political party at least one female
should be included among the officials of the party, he added. Interviews will be held and selected parties will be permitted for
registration on the return of Commissioner of Elections from abroad
after a vacation. 66 political parties have been registered as recognized political
parties with the Elections Secretariat up to date.
