SL government intends to keep Jaffna in SLA grip

Sri Lanka government has speeded up constructing several new Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camps and bases around Jaffna town. Hundreds of SLA soldiers are working day and night constructing a big base on the coastal area government land between Pa’n’nai and Kurunakar, sources in Jaffna said. A big SLA base is already under construction in Meenaadchipuram in Pa’n’nai area and another important base in Jaffna Fort. Meanwhile, though it had been announced that the private properties occupied by SLA 512 Division in Jaffna town are to be located elsewhere so far nothing in that direction has been done. Jaffna is being swiftly converted into a garrison town of SLA encircled by camps and bases, the sources added.
SLA has opened only the main roads in Jaffna town for public use while it refuses to vacate private properties like Gnanam and Subas hotels in the town. Meanwhile, the SLA sentry posts located along the coast of Jaffna peninsula continue to be maintained and restructured with the intention of making them permanent. All hopes of Jaffna returning to normalcy are fast dwindling as SLA tightens its grip on the peninsula, residents of Jaffna town said.
