Upcountry woman found dead in a flat in Colombo

A forty-year-old house maid employed in a flat in New Chetty Street in Kotahena area in Colombo city was found dead. The owner of the flat and her employer had told Kotahena Police that she had committed suicide by hanging. However, the police arrested her employer and detained the for further inquiry as they suspect foul play, police sources said.

The victim was identified as Vellaichchami Seetha Elin Ranee, a resident of Namunukala in the upcountry.

The death of this woman had caused anxiety and fear among upcountry community following deaths of four upcountry women on Thursday and Friday at Bogawanthalawa and Pusellawa in the central hills.

Four upcountry Tamil women committed suicide Wednesday and Thursday according to reports from Bogawanthalawa. Three of them are residents of Bogawanthalawa and one from Pusselawa, police said.
