Kaaththaankudi police alleged of hushing up killing of a family man

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 29 September 2010, 05:08 GMT]
A young family man was found hanging from the roof of his house located in Kalladi in Kaaththaankudi police division in Batticaloa district 12 August and the police had handed his body to his relatives after inquiry claiming he had committed suicide, without an inquest into the death by the magistrate or postmortem examination. Local residents, however, allege that the man was killed with the connivance of a policeman attached to Kaththaankudi police station who had an affair with the wife of the man found dead.

The victim is Selvarasa Sankar, 26, a three-wheeler driver and the father of a child.

His body was found hung of the roof 12 August. He had returned home after going to Peachchiyamman temple in Kalladi the same night, according to the complaint made by his wife to the police.

Sankar’s wife and his child were not in the house on the day of the incident, his relatives said.

The relatives alleged that Sankar’s wife had an affair with a policeman of Kaththaankudi police and Sankar who had learnt of the affair had quarreled with his wife on the day he was found dead.

Instructed by the policeman Sankar’s wife and her mother had killed him and hung his body on the rafter, the relatives said.

The killing was hushed up by Kaththaankudi police who claimed it was suicide.

Sri Lanka Army soldiers and Special Task Force police commandos in Batticaloa district are alleged of committing similar crimes with the assistance of paramilitary gangs, residents of the district said.
