Jaffna University bestowed honorary PhD degree to medical surgeon Dr. M. Ganesaratnam attached to Jaffna Teaching Hospital in its twenty-sixth convocation ceremony held Wednesday in Kailasapathy Auditorium, sources in Jaffna said. Chancellor M. Sivasuriya presided at the event in which more than 1200 students, including 22 of the medical faculty received their degrees. Law students passed out from Jaffna University for the first time in its history in this event.
Dr. Ganesaratnam had rendered valuable service to the people during the war period in Jaffna Teaching Hospital where he continues to serve. People in Jaffna peninsula hold Dr. Ganesaratnam in high regard for his dedicated and exemplary service to the public. Last year the convocation ceremony of Jaffna University was held for three days with five separate segments every day, in order to accommodate the 3,972 graduating students. This convocation had taken place after a period of three years as the University administration and its Student Union had decided not to hold any ceremonial events in the university while their fellow students caught in Vanni suffered in the war which broke in the latter part of 2006.
